A LAND OF CHARM AND TRADITION, AT THE GREAT LAKE OF ALQUEVA
In the middle of the Alentejo Region, Portel is in an excellent location and very accessible. It is linked to the main population centres by the IP2 to Évora, Beja and the Algarve and the A6 to Lisbon and Spain. Portel is characterised by inique wealth of nature and the biggest artificial lake in Europe, formed by the Alqueva Dam transformed the landscape, giving rise to a myriad of new sites of natural interest. Traces of human settlements from the distant past can be found throughout the region, showing the importance of this region through the ages. The town of Portel had beginnings in, and grew around, the imposing castle founded by D. João Peres de Aboim, the “lord of Portel” in the 13th century, who granted the town its charter in 1262.
